Vulnerability Assessments: Finding Your Weak Spots Before Attackers Do

Vulnerability Assessments: Finding Your Weak Spots Before Attackers Do

October’s Cyber Security Awareness Month may be over, but the threat calendar is not. Awareness is a useful starting point; keeping your business secure takes ongoing visibility into the systems, devices and services you rely on.

A vulnerability assessment helps you find weaknesses before attackers do, then decide what to fix first. It turns an unclear question: “Are we exposed?”- into a practical, prioritised plan. For a small or medium-sized business, that can mean fewer surprises, better-informed decisions and less risk of disruption.

What do vulnerability assessment services actually involve?

What is it?

A vulnerability assessment is a structured review of your technology environment to identify known security weaknesses. These might include outdated software, insecure settings, exposed services or devices that are missing important updates.

It is not simply a scan that produces a list of alarming scores. A useful assessment considers what you have, how each finding could affect your business and what action is proportionate.

How it works

A practical assessment typically involves three stages:

  1. Scanning: Tools examine agreed systems and services for known vulnerabilities and configuration issues. Depending on the scope, this may include internet-facing systems, network devices, computers, servers, cloud services and applications.
  2. Prioritisation: Findings are assessed in context. A weakness on an internet-facing system that handles important business data may need attention before a similar issue on an isolated, low-impact device.
  3. Reporting: You receive clear findings and recommended actions, ideally with an owner, priority and target date for each significant fix.

The result should be an actionable remediation plan, not just a technical report to file away.

What are attackers likely to look for first?

Attackers often look for weaknesses they can find and exploit at scale. That makes your internet-facing systems an important place to start: anything reachable from outside your organisation may be visible to people searching for vulnerable services.

An assessment may uncover issues such as:

  • Outdated operating systems, applications or network-device software.
  • Remote access services exposed unnecessarily or protected by weak controls.
  • Misconfigured firewalls, cloud services or applications.
  • Default or weak credentials.
  • Missing security updates.
  • Systems that are no longer supported by their supplier.

That does not mean every finding is an emergency. It means you need enough information to distinguish a weakness that could put a critical service at immediate risk from one that can be addressed through planned maintenance.

The National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC) guidance on vulnerability assessments recommends considering factors such as exposure, exploitability, business impact and threat intelligence. A high score alone does not tell you the whole story.

Is a vulnerability assessment the same as a penetration test?

No. They are related, but they answer different questions.

A vulnerability assessment is designed to identify and help manage known weaknesses across a defined scope. A penetration test is an authorised, expert-led exercise that attempts to exploit weaknesses in a system, within agreed boundaries, to test how far an attacker might get.

In simple terms:

  • Assessment: What known weaknesses are present, and what should we address?
  • Penetration test: Can a tester use weaknesses or attack paths to gain unauthorised access or reach important assets?

A penetration test can provide valuable assurance, but it is a point-in-time exercise. It does not replace regular vulnerability management. The NCSC’s penetration testing guidance explains how testing fits into an organisation’s wider security approach.

How often should a UK SME run an assessment?

For routine infrastructure vulnerability assessments, the NCSC recommends assessing the whole estate at least monthly. That gives you a regular opportunity to identify new weaknesses as systems, software and threats change.

You should also consider additional checks:

  • After applying a fix for a critical vulnerability, to confirm it worked.
  • When you make relevant changes to an application or system.
  • More frequently for exposed or business-critical services, where practical.
  • After major changes to your infrastructure, cloud environment or network.

Penetration testing is different: its frequency should reflect your risk, the amount of change in your environment, and any customer, regulatory or contractual requirements. Many organisations use periodic independent testing, sometimes annually, but this is not a universal NCSC-set interval. Ask your IT or security provider what cadence makes sense for your systems and risk.

What should you do when the report arrives?

A long list of findings can feel daunting, especially if this is your first assessment. The important thing is to turn the results into decisions and tracked actions.

A sensible process is to:

  1. Confirm the scope and evidence. Check that the affected systems are yours, the findings are understood and any uncertain results are investigated.
  2. Prioritise the highest risks. Give early attention to exposed systems, actively exploited weaknesses and issues affecting important business services.
  3. Assign an owner and due date. Every significant finding needs someone responsible for coordinating the fix.
  4. Fix, mitigate or formally accept the risk. If you cannot apply a permanent fix immediately, consider a temporary measure and set a review date. Record why any risk is accepted.
  5. Rescan and verify. Confirm that remediation has worked rather than assuming the issue is closed.

Without follow-through, a report can leave your business with the same exposure it had before. Unresolved weaknesses may increase the chance of service disruption, data loss, recovery costs and difficult conversations with customers or suppliers. A prioritised plan helps you address risk in a controlled way.

How does assessment fit into your wider cyber security routine?

Vulnerability assessments work best as part of a continuing security routine, not as a one-off exercise. They complement controls such as endpoint and email security, secure backups, access management, staff training and monitoring.

Your routine should also include:

  • Maintaining an inventory of devices, systems and important services.
  • Applying security updates promptly, particularly for critical issues.
  • Reviewing who has access to business accounts and systems.
  • Monitoring for suspicious activity and responding to alerts.
  • Testing that backups can be restored.
  • Reviewing your security after significant business or technology changes.

This is the natural next step after awareness: move from knowing that threats exist to regularly checking where your own business may be exposed. Our October Cyber Security Awareness Month guide explored the broader foundations. Vulnerability management helps turn that awareness into ongoing action.

Ready to uncover your weak spots?

You do not need to guess which weaknesses matter most or tackle every finding at once. The right assessment gives you a clearer picture, helps you focus on the risks that matter to your business and provides a practical route to improvement.
